Background
Born in Binghamton, New York, to Lithuanian immigrants, Sharkey took his ring name from his idols Tom Sharkey and Jack Dempsey and built his reputation in Boston. He won the world heavyweight title from Max Schmeling in 1932 and lost it to Primo Carnera in 1933.
